Alexander Greenberg (he/him) is a versatile musician working in New York City and at regional theaters across the US. Originally from Maryland, he studied Piano in Combination with Theater at Ithaca College, graduating magna cum laude. He served as assistant music director for the 2017 national tour of Pippin, where he also was associate conductor and Keyboard 2 in the pit.
In New York, he is active as a pianist, keyboard programmer, copyist, and coach. Most recently, he made his Broadway playing debut as a Keyboard 2 substitute for A Beautiful Noise on Broadway, where he also served as supervising copyist and is a rehearsal and audition pianist. He is also a rehearsal pianist for the Broadway and national tour companies of Moulin Rouge: The Musical. He made his off-Broadway debut working as music assistant and rehearsal pianist on Michael Friedman’s Unknown Soldier at Playwrights Horizons. He served as music assistant and synth programming associate on Gettin’ the Band Back Together on Broadway, and was the keyboard programmer for BC/EFA’s Broadway Backwards 2019, which raised over $700k for BC/EFA and the LGBT Center. He was the copyist for The Wanderer, featuring the music of Dion, at Papermill Playhouse. He also assisted the music technology team on the national tours of Spongebob the Musical and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as the teams for the Broadway productions of Beetlejuice, King Kong, and the OBC recording of Be More Chill. He enjoys working as music assistant and rehearsal pianist on development reading, including projects like The Devil Wears Prada (music by Elton John), Working Girl (music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper), and The Right Girl (featuring the music of Diane Warren), among others.
He has done the keyboard programming for several seasons at the Tony-award winning Signature Theater in Arlington, Virginia, most recently for acclaimed productions of The Color Purple (2023 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Production), Soft Power, Pacific Overtures, Passing Strange, and Sweeney Todd, as well as playing keyboard in the pit orchestras for Crazy for You and Billy Elliot.
Alex has been on staff at Broadway Artists Alliance since 2017, where he has worked as a coach, accompanist, and music director for young performers seeking training. He also coaches working performers in New York City for upcoming auditions and performances, and has worked at NYU Steinhardt, NYU Tisch, and Pace University as an accompanist for classes, private lessons, and recitals. He has been seen at Feinsteins’s/54 Below as a musician in several concerts, and is always seeking new collaboration opportunities.
